They are quite many here. Some - are siblings, but mostly they aren’t even relatives to one another. They live with their mothers. There are no Dads in.

This is the asylum for mothers and children, under the protection of Patriarchy. It was founded almost 10 years ago and every year new group of people get shelters here. Now there are totally 10 women.

Tamila, 34, from Adjara and her little son are one of the oldest inhabitants of the asylum. 2 years have passed since she first found worm bedroom and food here. This is not her only child, she has also 2 others, but they live with their grandmother now.

Everyone knows her story and she never gets critics for it. Tamila was married; her husband went to Greece for work. 10 years passed and she found out that he had another family there. Then there appeared the other man, with whom he fall in love and got pregnant. The man had his own family and he refused both, Tamila and her kid. She went to her parents but they threw her away. So she went to the capital and she left her two other kids at her ex-husband’s place.

“He asked me to make abortion but I refused. This was my decision. I went to the clinics for two times, but I couldn’t make abortion. I wanted to give birth to Gio and I think he should have been born”, she says now.

Tamila can explain easily the reason her parents and brother didn’t accept her: “ I used to be married and I got pregnant from another man, not my husband people around, where I’m from would say a lot of bad things about me. My parents knew this”.

Asylum director Davit Datuashvili visits Tamila and others every day. Children coming from school often have to tell him their marks, honestly, even if they got 6 or 5. Anyway he won’t get angry with them. He is the responsible for their medical assistance, food, education and all other necessary things.

Today one boy got bitten but the dog and he has to take him immediately to the hospital for anti – rubies injection. None of them are insured. There are no social programs which protect those mothers and kids. Last year the children were refused to go to the camp because technically neither ministry of education nor Health Ministry is responsible for them.

Father Davit comes to the asylum every week and he knows every story which women have gone through. They pray together and some of them are even father Davit’s spiritual children. He says that the kids who are born without marriage must not be aborted, as they are all sons and daughters of God and the church treats them all equally. “From the day the baby is fecundated, father is responsible for it and he should care about him. Of course the best way is to have ceremony, but whatever happens next, the mother shouldn’t abort the baby”, he says.

...

There is another shelter for single mothers in Tbilisi, which works on the government budget. Irina Bequridze, director of Tbilisi Infant House is in charge of it. Since 2007 her institution unites the asylum for single mothers. It was founded by the NGO World Vision in 2002, in frames of pilot project “Prevention and deinstitutionalization of abandoning babies”. After 4 years the project was handed to the Ministry of Health and Social Care.

Almost 50 women get shelters there every year. The time they can stay varies from 3 months to a year and a half. During this time the mothers are in a close contact with their social workers, and based on the data provided by the social service, the directorate of the asylum decides how long the appointee can stay there.

There are 10 kids, 9 mothers and one pregnant, in the asylum at present. The total limit is 21 mothers and kids. “Even the first hours are very important for a woman, who leaves the maternity hose, and she knows that her baby has no family and she has no friends any bore because they all have refused her. When they see that such place exists and they don’t have to live in the street, this is a huge relief as they say. May be several months aren’t enough but they learn motherhood here and they become more motivated in life”, says Irina Bequridze. She thinks prevention of abandoning infants in that case, works successfully.

The asylum also tries to mediate between the families and the single mothers. Not all attempts are successful they say.

Maia Tsereteli, Director of World Vision was one of the founder of the asylum. She also remembers the cases of mediation between the families and refused women. She says they have problems with society, and mostly when they are from rural areas. “When the woman has no income and no close people who can provide her with necessary things, of course the natural and only way for her is to leave the baby at the infant house”, she says.

World Vision has two approaches for solving this problem: one is to mediate between the families and abandoned mothers, where they even try to change the attitude of environment towards the single mother (in narrow social groups, like in small villages); and another is to find employment for them. In both cases social workers are involved into the process.

World Vision has also established the Day Houses for those single mothers who are estimated as poor and their pre-kindergarten kids need someone to look after during the hours they are at work. This is pilot project yet and only few numbers of mothers can use it.

Maka Tatulashvili is employment program manager in World Vision and Day House. She says that some women aren’t willing to start new independent life because they are afraid of the environment but when they work properly they always have desired success.

Keti Burjiashvili is the psychologist of the asylum for single mothers. She confirms that providing women with the job is crucial in the process of their socialization. She says most of them are psychologically damaged, but in spite of this, very few of them want to talk about their problem.

The psychologist says that these women are victims of social attitude. “May be their parents also find it difficult to reject their pregnant daughters but because of the stereotypes and social opinion which is severe, those women and their new born babies stay absolutely alone and the children are called illegal kids,” she says.

The fact that the social opinion is really severe towards the women with kids and no marriage is clearly seen from the data of Caucasus Research resource Centre (CRRC). According to Caucasus Barometer 2009, on the question ‘from what age is it exactable for woman to have sex before marriage’, 80 per cent says that is not exactable at any age. As for the cohabitee of man and woman without marriage, for 72 per cent of inquired this is not exactable at all.

Social attitude towards the mothers who gave birth their children without church blessing or legal confirmation is quite radical in Georgia. Based on the general picture, it is easy to identify how broad the risk group of being abandoned can.

Failed Kisses

GEORGIA - Tbilisi: 'We kiss in the park cuz we like it': This was the name of the event created in Facebook with almost 600 'attend' and many supportive comments below. The group of people protesting new rules of behavior in public places, decided to gather in a newly opened park at Rike, where the kissing to the partner is prohibited by the park security.

The way of expressing position towards the unwritten new law, was unusual for the Tbilisi citizens, where meetings are always politically motivated and with radical demands.

The event started at 8 p.m and from the very beginning the organizers seemed to be out of plan. The number of reporters prevailed over the couples; there were no microphones, no slogans and no synchronic kisses.

Shy couples were observing minority of daredevils from the distance. In spite of total intentions, nothing exciting happened, which certainly means that the massage “we kiss in Mariam Bolokadze says that while buying that particular medicine almost always the assistants of the drug store give her “long and boring” suggestions of alternative with the same generic or in other words the same main component, though she has the prescription on that very brand.

Bolokadze is sure that the medicine she often uses is really helpful unlike another one, suggested by the chemist. In fact here are two problems, first the way prescription was written and another – the question, has the drag store assistant any right to change your mind?

Dr. Devi Khechinashvili Georgian Insurance Association (GIA) Chairman of the Board Thinks that the misunderstood and problems among chemists and consumers in such cases are mainly caused by the fact that there is wrong policy of writing prescriptions in Georgia.

Hardly anyone knows that as it follows the doctors should prescribe generics and not the brand names to the patients. This is widely spread tendency in many western countries. As Dr. Khechinashvili explains. Here also there lurks other problem according to him: “Pharmaceutical companies have some ties with the doctors, giving them commission as a profit. This is at least non ethical I think”. He also added that in other countries such activities count as a criminal like in some way that might be even dangerous for the patient.

Still the doctors calm that there is too small and only theoretic chance for any serious side effects in case of substituting two similar medicines.

The head of the emergency department in Tbilisi Republican Hospital Giorgi Gotsadze thinks that it is practically impossible any drug store to sell to the consumer absolutely different consistence for any marketing reasons and in all the other cases one and the same generics cannot harm consumer. He gives prescriptions with pharmacological appointment and the patients never have complained about suggesting something different from this.

Some private chemist stores are also keen on giving choices as they call to the consumers while buying the medicine. Lia Tsakadze is the owner and pharmacist of the drug store at Nutsubidze Street. “Consumers don’t like when I suggest them some cheaper replacements. They want exactly that medicine which was prescribed to them”.

She says that there are some regular clients from her district who trust her and they take her advice into consideration. Lia Tsakadze remembers many cases when consumers were thankful to her for cheaper alternative of the prescribed medicine.

She says that still the pharmacists shouldn’t force the consumers to buy certain medicine for any marketing purpose, but if they do so, they should be very careful as a side effect isn’t the issue which can be excluded.

“The consumers mostly make substitutions in two medical analogues when they need them for small treatment and the difference among them is in price”. This is the tendency detected by Lia Tsakadze during her working experience as a pharmacist.

According to the CRRC (Caucasus Research Resource Center) enquiry of 2008, 29 percent of Georgia’s population goes to pharmacy for small cold treatment. The smallest number of the small cold treatment falls on the visit of doctor, which is about 5 percent in Georgia. As it appears from the data Georgians prefer to do nothing or have a hot cup of tea (34percent) when they feel the symptoms of the cold.

Devi Khechinashvili says that expenses on medicine in Georgia are 9-10%from GDP and for about 40% out of this falls on pharmaceutical service. He explains that this is not good as pharmacy merges the shares of other medical services. This is only one part of the chain which links to the monopoly of the market and uncontrolled prices on drugs.

Meanwhile the representatives of two largest drug store chain Aversi don’t want to give comments about what criteria are the medicines suggested to the consumers. The representatives of PSP Group, another market leader also don’t seem willing to speak about this issue and they even find it strange why the press got interested with such things. Yet the consumers like Maro Bolokadze are still confused in one hand because of the wrong prescription policy and on the other hand due to the lack of information about their rights as consumers.

The Character of Georgian Ancestors Revealed through Clothing

The FINANCIAL

On Chavchavadeze Avenue, in downtown Tbilisi , knock-off European clothing brands sit next to high-tech shops, in-vogue peep-toe platforms pose near the trendy iPad. However Samoseli Pirveli has little to share with them: the shop doesn’t sell the latest outfits, but the ultra-traditional Georgian chokhas. Sewn from thick fabric, tight at the waist and loose at the end, the chokha is the traditional male dress in the Caucasus, its use dating back to the 9th century. Email

By the 1920s chokhas started becoming a rare sight on the street: now they usually only feature at folk-associated events like weddings and similar celebrations. However the pride for traditional Georgian clothing seems to be returning.

Levan Vasadze and Luarsab Togonidze are old friends that share a passion for traditional Georgian clothing. They felt the market was ready for an old-fashioned clothing company that looks at the past but meets the demands of today’s customers. Luarsab Togonidze, now Samoseli Pirveli’s General Director, says that the company was established over a year ago, but the shop was opened in March this year.

They used the months in between to carry out historical research of the style, the fabrics, the design, the master tailors, and the accessories of chokhas through the centuries. “We also looked at how much theatre and cinema changed the real style of clothes,” explained Togonidze. The entire collection is created in Georgia by the 40 people employed in the company. Most of the designs are based on old photographs, so the chokhas produced are mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Wearing chokhas in the 21st century is not exactly comfortable. The thick fabric makes them unbearable in the scorching Caucasus summer sun.

Who buys chokhas today then? The buyers are Georgians who want them for special events, like weddings, or foreigners fascinated by the style. So the prices in the shop are not very expensive. In other European countries national costumes cost even more, like Scottish kilt prices which start from 90 EUR and can go up to 900-1,000 EUR. “The prices range between 250 and 1,040 GEL, which is reasonable for chokhas,” explained shop assistant Irina Alelishvili. Some orders also come from corporate customers for their parties.

Over the last few weeks, orders have been up to 5-7 in a day which is quite a good number, say company representatives.

The General Director of the company says that there are certain impulses which different outfits give to the person wearing them. “In these ancient clothes we can see the character of our ancestors, their style of life and their nature. I don’t want to give the Chokha some sacral meaning but it certainly has some sort of metaphysical power,” he said.

The company owners plan to enlarge their business, opening branches across the capital and beyond. Contacts with the Georgian diaspora may lead to opening a similar shop in Turkey.

In Georgia there used to be different variations of the Chokha in the different regions, therefore shops that sell them should provide a variety of traditional clothing. For example there is the Kartli-Kakheti chokha, which is longer than others, with a V-neck on the chest and worn without a belt.

The most popular one is still the classic black and white, which is most often chosen by bridegrooms. Traditionally the Chokha needs many little details such as ornamental daggers and cartridge belts to complete the image of the old fighting and defensive traditions of Georgian men. They cost extra and almost every Chokha shop supplies them. These plus black polished boots create the image of a man from the 18th and 19th centuries in Georgia.

After the Second World War traditional Georgian clothes became less popular. It was associated with the showing off of nobility. The Soviet regime drastically changed the mood of the population. In recent years the Chokha has become popular again. This was the will of the Catholicos Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II, who the idea of creating the brand “Samoseli Pirveli” is contributed to as well. The company owners say that the brand will definitely be successful because the idea and mentality of the typical Soviet soldier and his clothing has departed and the country is restoring its traditions in the same way as many other European countries have done.

Despite its original flair, Samoseli Pirveli is the latest addition to the already established, albeit niche, business of traditional Georgian clothing and accessories.

Art Saloon on central Rustaveli Avenue has been selling chokhas for 20 years. All the traditional items of clothing are sewn by various Georgian tailors who also stitch together puppets and papakhi, the round sheep’s wool hat, common in the highlands of the country. Pridon Magradze, the store’s director explains that each style, each piece of clothing, has a history. “In the old times women would spend several years sewing garments for their future husbands, which their husband would then wear during battle.”

There are many different sizes of Chokha. The prices start from 120-130 GEL but don’t include the accessories which are necessary to complete the traditional look.

Keti Topchishvili works at Art Saloon: she reckons that about 15-20 chokhas are sold every month, a number that doubles during the “wedding season”, when there are no fasting days. “Generally 7 out of 10 chokhas purchased are for a wedding,” she said. As for the style, foreigners tend to go for purple while Georgians stick to the traditional black-and-white scheme.

In most cases the customers ask for a costume to be made specially for them. This takes a week. The service is as fast as possible. The dresses and Chokhas which are for different celebrations in real life are thicker than those which are used for stage, as the dancers should feel free in them. Unlike “Samoseli Pirveli”, Art Saloon on Rustaveli has Chokhas for stage but dancers mostly buy their outfits individually. The shops don’t receive large scale group orders. Sometimes they send their outfits abroad. For example they sent four highland dresses to Singapore for a Georgian wine festival there.

Samoseli Pirveli doesn’t have a women’s department yet, but they say that in the autumn they are going to launch a women’s line as well. The designers are in the process of creating a dress line for the part of society which spends the most on clothing. But buyers can even get some accessories for women now. These are scarves with traditional Georgian decorations. One can also get tiny Chokhas made for infants and little children. The shop representatives say that many people buy outfits for the younger generations.

Chokhas are mainly for men. But the revival of traditional clothing has touched upon women as well and the demand for female garments has increased. Ana Ninua, a young costume artist, is working on the women’s collection at Samoslei Pirveli. She says that the traditional Georgian woman was very feminine and beautiful. Long skirts decorated with ornaments are going to be preserved in the 21st century collection as well. This will show a return of traditional Georgian women’s clothing, just as the chokha has returned to the lives of Georgian men.

Two World of Tsigani

Tsigani means Gypsy in Russian and this is the name people in Georgia often address to the beggers in the street or those merchants who mostly sell things at the territory of Tbilisi central railway station. Actually the last one is from Moldova and the other doesn’t know its roots. These are the people of different nationality united under the same name by the strange circumstance. These are the two worlds of Tbilisi Tsigani’s.

Bella is 16. She lives with her large family including parents, siblings, aunt and cousins. She lives in Tbilisi, suburb called Africa but she came here from western Georgia, Batumi. “I don’t know from where my family comes. I know nothing about my ancestors and grandparents. They lived before me, so how can I know them” says Bella but she knows that local people identify her and her family as Tsigani or Gypsy.

Everybody in the suburb Africa can show the way to the Gypsy community, saying that they are not dangerous people at all. Bella and other Tsigani live in tiny huts without electricity. The shelters aren’t furnished. “It is very difficult to live here in winter”, Bella says. Dressed in shabby clothes, she and other kids from her family beg in the city center. “We are given mostly money, sometimes clothes as well”, she says. Men of the family mostly get money by collecting metal things and selling them.

Neither Bella nor her family members have any ID cards. They don’t have any certain religion and the kids even don’t know their second names. Some of them speak Georgian, some – don’t. The older members of the family speak Azerbaijani language as they used to live there. Also they understand a little Russian. The children can read and write Georgian, learnt during the short-time classes.

Vakho is 12, he is Bella’s cousin. When I grow up, I don’t want to ask money standing in the street,” he says.

Bella has her wish as well. She wants to work. “I’d love to be a shop assistant or something like this but I know nobody will give me this position”. She just smiled and didn’t explain the reason she thinks like that.

Unlike Bella, Ella Lupashko, 20, is more comfortable in the society and labor market. She is called Tsigani but she is from Moldova. Her husband and family lives in Lotkini suburb and they all work at the bazaar near the central railway station. “I live here with the people of my nationality, but I’d rather live somewhere calmer place then this community”, she says.

Ella doesn’t remember any case of wrong attitude towards her nationality but her mother in law, Tamara Cheremushina , 60 – does. “I live here all my life. My family is here, my daughter is buried in Georgia, I feel like home, but I remember the lime when we might even be taken to the police if we said we were Tsigani. I don’t know why. We aren't doing anything bad”.

In Lotkini, there are some mixed Georgian-Moldovian families as well. This is not strange for them as both are orthodox Christians.

Nona Jalabadze, 21, says that her family and friends were at first against her marriage with a Tsigani man but now that have no problems with it. Her husband is a merchant as well and they live in a sell cozy house.

Both group of Tsigani people live in the same city. That’s because the powerful religious figure in this small orthodox Christian country has initiated a policy of ordaining the third and more children of the families applied to the patriarchy in certain deadlines which is announced several times in a year started from 2008.

He’s responding to a dramatic decrease in Georgia’s population over the past two decades, which due to a decrease in birth rate and a dramatic increase in migration to other countries, has lost nearly 1.4 million since 1990. That’s similar to tendencies across the Caucasus and other CIS countries. The though in Azerbaijan the decrease happened later then Georgia and it happened quickly which is worse as Giorgi Tsuladze says, a professor of demography at Tbilisi Ilia Chavchavadze State University. In this case, it makes bigger gap in generations.

Georgia has historically suffered great population losses – the most dramatic in the 1700s, when the southern provinces of modern Georgia , due to invaders from the Ottoman empire were depleted to no more than 1.7 million, at best, and 750,000 at worst.

There are no Turkish invaders these days, but only modern lifestyle, which makes it harder for women to work and bear children.

Demographic problems of different level are in many countries around the world. Some west European countries have pro-natal policy which is directed to the increase of country’s birth rate. Such country is France, where the more children a family has the more benefits it gets from social funds. Compared to England which isn’t oriented on such policy, in France birth rate is about 10 percent higher, according to Giorgi Tsuladze Tbilisi Ilia Chavchavadze University professor, demographer.

He thinks that at present, the government is more oriented on other issues then the demographic one but Tsuladze says that even if they change the priorities, the policy isn’t capable to make a demographic boost in a short time.

What may be needed are the right incentives to have bigger families, and for Georgians, that may be religious leadership. The fact that religion is really important for Georgians in making decisions is also clearly seen from the CRRC (Caucasus Research Resource Center) research of recent years. The majority or nearly half the population in Georgia says religion factor matters whereas in Armenia and Azerbaijan it takes 26-27 percent only. 83 percent of the Georgia’s population says that they trust to the religious institution, whereas 30 percent takes president.

Despite the general demographic decrease, during last two years, there is distinguished tendency of growth in number of second and third children (The number of the third children increased by, 1323 in 2007-2008).

The chief manager of the Patriarch Fund, Irakli Kadagishvili says that the patriarch came up with this idea several years ago after discussing demographic problems with leading demographers of the country.

“This is a good stimulus to the parents. Mostly first two children are born in a short time after making families and as for the next children; parents usually hesitate to have them. Patriarch’s initiative was a strong encouragement for many couples to have more than two children as godfather and godchildren are relatives to each other”, explains Kadagishvili.

In spite of the positive effect of Patriarch’s initiative in demographic angle, Dr.Tsuladze thinks that this should be carefully studied. He says that international experience has shown such artificial incentives can stimulate the opposite effect. In general, when there occurs some financial and other kinds of factors as the stimuli of demographic increase it is followed by a drastic gap afterwards. For example if giving birth to third and fourth children is planned in next six years (this is called timing) and because of some factors you give birth along the next three years, the period after this, will be demographic gap. I cannot say exactly weather in Georgia’s case this can be problem or not but such growth in third and the next children should be studied deeply.”, says Tsuladze.

Kadagishvili says that the patriarchy would be willing to take part in the studies on this issue. He says that the initiative of Ilia II was a good stimulus but only this effort cannot make big change in the overall picture, so it cannot become the reason of a big gap in demographic timing.

Another obstacle for demographic growth in Georgia is families which have only one child and they don’t want to have more. Irina Abdushelishvili, 40, has got only a daughter now. “My husband and I are very busy with our jobs and my 10 year-old- daughter has been brought up mainly by my mother”, she says. So her childhood dream about having three kids, still remain as a dream only.

Tbilisi State University – Under Great Reconstruction

“It is the fifth year of my studies in Tbilisi State University”, says Mako Abashidze masters student of Social and Political Science. Looking back through the past five years she mentions that only a little, less important technical changes have been done to the buildings of the university.

Tbilisi State University’s (TSU) first building is under big reconstruction now and as a student, she is very curious what will come out of all these. In spite of her interest she is also a little skeptical about any great improvement in the university life but still says: “In any case I don’t want to lose my hope completely’’.

Hopes and expectations are higher among those, directly involved in the reconstruction project. They call it ‘turning point’ in the history of the oldest university of Georgia and Caucasus. Renovation started at the end of 2008 and will finish in 2011, but part of the building will be opened for the students by 2010.

The project is financed by Cartu Group Holding, founded by businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili and it is a charitable project. Representatives of TSU say that they only have to cooperate favorably with the project initiators, all the rest is up to Cartu Group. This is a kind will of a businessman, they declare.

In official comments, Cartu Group categorically refuses to tell the cost of the project, arguing that it is the founder’s charity and it doesn’t matter how much he spends; besides, the project isn’t over and there might appear additional expenses in future.

Gia Khubua, Rector of TSU, says that after reconstruction students will have the environment oriented on their interests. “First building will be alive with active and modern student life soon”, promises Khubua, adding: “Besides, our aim is to return historical and architectural justice to the building.”

Chief architect of the project, Givi Gabunia, has been working on renovation of the Simon Janashia Museum (Cartu Group is working on it even now) before he got involved in TSU project. Gabunia confirms that the main aim of the architects is to return to the first building the original look, but at the same time the building should respond modern university standards.

The architect says that they will install new heating system and 200 doors from chestnut tree, one of the most expensive materials which cost about GEL 2000 at retailers. So by rough calculations simply replacing doors may cost to them around GEL 400 000. Beyond that there will be made two yards, one with pavement and special spots where the students can sit, chat and relax, and another one, the pantheon side, with new paths and lawns. Cartu group imports materials from Turkey and Germany.

Although the building is short of classrooms, no extension of the building is planned: “we have no right to attach new constructions to the historical one” explains Gabunia, instead, he says, part of the old study departments of different faculties will be reconstructed and used as additional auditoria. Apart from ordinary rooms, historical auditoria carrying names of Vazha Pshavela, Akaki Tsereteli and other prominent cultural figures will be preserved, but also used as space for lectures.

One of the big parts of this project is a modern library, with the space of 1000 square meters. It will keep 200 000 books, part of which will be purchased by Cartu Group, as they claim, for one million US dollars and it will cover all disciplines.

The building will have new museum of Education and Science in old cupola-shaped hall, room for cultural events, Performance hall and conference hall for 650 people, equipped with the latest video and audio devices. Cartu Group will provide university with all these and as chief architect says for the installation of the new devices they will invite German specialists.

Head of TSU Administration, Roman Kharbedia explains that when the repairing work will be finished, here will be placed different studying departments and will be held lectures, mostly for the students of the Humanitarian faculty.

Davit Cherkezishvili, head of the Department of Material Resources, says that during many years different basic works done in the building have damaged historical arrangement of the rooms. In 70s a basketball hall was attached to it that changed primary form of the historical monument. After restoration it will be deconstructed and moved to another end of the building.

Another challenging project of Cartu Group, TSU representatives say, is building the University campus, which will serve not only the students of TSU, but also those, who will study in other accredited universities of Tbilisi. However, this plan is in the far future now.

First building at 1, Chavchavadze Avenue is only a part of the large university complex; comprised of ten buildings of TSU in Tbilisi (the numbering system is different. Building 7 doesn’t exist so, the last building which is XI in fact is the Xth). The rest nine buildings are not in the project financed by Cartu Group. All the repairing works done there are financed by the companies, which won different tenders.

The budget of TSU amounts GEL 32million every year, the income mostly from the studying fee, the students pay. According to the law the university has right to grant on lease part of their buildings for additional income but as Gia Khubua says they don’t use this right because all the space is used for educational purposes. The exception is only building VIII in which branch of the bank Republic is leased. Gia Khubua claims that it was given the lease in 2003 before he became in charge.

Since its foundation in 1918, first Caucasian university has gone through many changes. It had 25 rectors, and for about 85 generation of alumni. There were many external changes as well which also reflected on the history of the university, changes in ideology and politics - the way from independent republic to the democratic country via Soviet dictatorship. During this period the university played central part in the life of the country, for example in 80-90s TSU was the strongest supporting power of the country’s total protest. Now in XXI century it is trying to face the new challenges.

Story Idea

My story idea for today is about protection of the copy rights at the blogs. How well are protected the rights of the bloggers in Georgia. Are they always willing when their stories or different kinds of information are copied to another blogs or web sites?

I would interview bloggers who complain about violation of the copy rights and I would inquire form them what should be done to avoid this in future. Of course it would be interesting to find out if Georgian legislation cares about the Copy rights like that.

I’m also interested with the statistics of violation of Georgian bloggers’ copyrights and in particular what kind of information are usually used for different purpose.

Saakashvili comments about 4 detained teenagers from Tirdznisi.

According to the Interpressnews, on November, 8 President Saakashvili made a comment about kidnapping 4 teenagers from village Tirdznisi. The president officially denounced the fact of detaining Georgian teenagers by the de-facto government.

“The empire of great Russia has detained the teenagers for violating unrecognized borders. If they want to prove their greatness with this fact, nobody is envy for them”, said Saakashvili during his visit in Gori region.

The president stated that the non-recognized border is a border between humaneness and inhumanness, past and future and not the border between politically recognized two countries.
Four Georgian teenagers were detained by the de facto South Ossetian government on Wednesday night. Giorgi Ramishvili, Levan Khmiadashvili, Zviad Tsabadze and Viktor Buchukuri, are students in the 9th, 10th and 12th grades of Tirdznisi School.

Separatist’s Interior Ministry’s press crevice states that the boys were illegally penetrating the territory of South Ossetia. Georgian side confirms this incident but describes it as kidnapping. According to the Interpressnews, the only result of the meeting was that they decided to sign an arrangement on November 4.

Caucasus Online takes responsibility to cover GEL 624 712 arrears. Based on the agreement, Caucasus Online will return back to UTG bilaterally signed documents during last 2 years. The company will also pay GEL 500 000 which has caused range of disagreements between two companies. Because of it Caucasus Online was not allowed on the electronic communication cannels.

Officially the disagreement between two companies finished on October, 28, but 6 000 subscribers of the Caucasus Online are still without internet connection. As the representatives of the company explain this is caused by the technical problems with UTG, which will also be solved in nearest future. UTG has stopped providing devices of Caucasus Online with the electricity and this has been the main reason why thousands of subscribers are left without internet connection.

Caucasus Online is a merger of three internet providers, Caucasus Network, Sanet and Georgia Online. These three market leaders united under the common name in 2006. United Telecom is the provider of the telecommunication services in Georgia, providing a telephone network and underground communication facilities. The relation between UTG and Caucasus Online has been strained since June 2005, when United Telecom announced that it would offer its own internet service.

Story Idea.

My story idea is about Social Networks and the number of kids in it. Many children under under 12 are registered for such social networks as it is Odnoklassniki.ru, facebook.com, geoclass.ge et.c. The problem is that controlling social networks is almost impossible. Nobody can guarantee psychological safety of the children or the threats of different abuse.

It would be interesting if there exists any kind of researche in Georgia showing in figures how many kids are registered in Georgian social networks ex: geoclass.ge. The view of psychologists referring to this issue will also be interesting.

The position of the parents will be important point in my story as well. What do they think about this? Do their children have any kind of online profile? This was declared by the Independent Electoral Commission just after they canceled Saturday’s presidential runoff as another candidate Abdullah Abdullah was withdrawn from the presidential race.

According to the BBC News, the runoff could have been held even with the single candidate but Electoral commission made such decision due to the security threats and money problems.

CNN reports that soon Barack Obama is going to call Karzai and congratulate for his winning at the elections. US responded this event by saying that Karzai is “legitimate leader” of Afghanistan. UN secretary Ban Ki-moon declared Afghanistan 2009 elections as the most difficult one in which UN has been involved.

Hundreds of thousands of votes were discounted from August's first round, including almost a third of ballots cast for Karzai. Abdullah had demanded key officials be removed from the Independent Electoral Commission, which is widely regarded as pro-Karzai, ahead of any run-off vote.

Since the removal of Taliban regime in 2001 Hamid Karzai has been President of Afghanistan. The students of several state universities who have passed exams this summer are still in obscure situation. The thing is that they were allowed to attend the lectures but they still don’t know whether they will be financed by the state or not.

Hundreds of students who attending intensive lectures might find out one day that they cannot go on their studies because of the financial problems. Not everybody can afford the fee of Master’s degree.

Another interesting issue in this topic is that the exact date for the final results of the examinations isn’t known yet. There are a lot of questions which can be asked to someone responsible for the Graduate record Examinations at the Ministry of Education and Science, ex: when will it be possible for the students to learn about their final results? What do they think about such system and if they are going to improve it for teh next year? And finally why haven’t they got the final results yet when sufficiently long time has passed after exams?

It will also be interesting point in the story what the students think about such an obscure situation and how it impacts over their motivation of proceeding studies in general.

Konstantine Gamsakhurdia - back in the parliament.

The leader of the Freedom Party, Konstantine Gamsakhurdia will return to the Parliament. He declared this after the meeting with the chairman of the Parliament Davit Bakradze, on October 29. Gamsakhurdia explained that after creating Parliamentary commission on Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s death he made up his mind to join the parliament.

After the meeting with Bakradze, at the interview with the Interpressnews Gamsakhurdia mentioned: “As an MP, I had the conversation about international politics and about the levers we hold”, he also added that the question of his possible appointment as a vice speaker wasn’t discussed during the meeting.

Davit Bakradze seemed satisfied with the meeting. “If we want once and for ever to put the end to the sense of instability, chaos and unpredictability in Georgian Politics, to learn not only going out into the streets , but also to sit in the institutions and political structures together, to work together and to settle problems through a civilized dialogue. Debates will be more important and active,” Bakradze said.

The chairman of the parliament stated that he is interested with the strengthening of oppositional power within the parliament.

As for the future plans of Konstantine Gamsakhurdia he isn’t going to join any political faction at the parliament. He also thinks that as the legislative branch doesn’t lack amount of the independent MP-s he excludes creating his own faction.

In September parliament endorsed constitutional amendment allowing 10 oppositional politicians, to return back to the legislative branch if they wished. The reason Gamsakhurdia had refused his MP mandate was his protest, with other 11 oppositional members, towards the results of May 21, 2008 parliamentary elections.

Story Idea

Let me tell you a little about my story idea. The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia started new studying course for the 5th grade schoolchildren which is called Tolerance. The course is financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The textbooks are based on the Television Series ‘The stories of our neighborhood’, which used to be a puppet shop for the children at Imedi TV.

The launching of the subject in at the schools was widely supported by the first Lady of Georgia Sandra Elisabeth Roulofs. The small entertaining stories give the children examples of tolerance. The only problem with all these, is the fact that the books aren’t sold at the book stores and the schoolchildren have to borrow them from the school libraries where the amount of the textbooks is not enough for everyone.

I find this story interesting because the subject is new for the shcools . There are many questions that rise up around this issue: why are the number of books so limited? What does it bring to children as a subject? Are the teachers, who give the lessons in this subject trained in this field? Why does it happesn so that the new subjects like Tolerance appear at the school schedules where there are not certainly enough hours for such subjects as it is ex: Russian lenguage. To cut in short there ar e many interesting points in this case (I think so).

Ban Ki-moon comments on Taliban raid in Afghanistan.

On October 28, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made official comment at his monthly press conference in New York about Taliban raid in Kabuli, Afghanistan during which, there were killed 5 staff members of the UN. He said that all that happened was “shocking and shameless”.

At the same day official web site of the UN spreads the full speech of the Secretary General, “If anything, this incident should remind us how tough our job is. Our people work, often selflessly, in the most dangerous places in the world. Those who gave their lives today came to Afghanistan armed not with guns or bullets. They came with a more powerful weapon – hope. Hope for a better day for Afghanistan and a commitment to help its people build a better world and a better future”, stated Mr. Ban. He also added that the UN won’t be deterred from this noble mission in spite of such tragedy.

On Wednesday, at 6 a.m, militants attacked a private guesthouse in Kabul and in 2 hours of attack they killed at least five United Nations staff members.

According to the CNN, the exact number of UN staff members being there during the incident is still unknown but there were intended to stay 20 of them, at the guesthouse.

At the telephone call with the AP, Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid claimed the responsibility for the attack. He said that 3 suicide terrorists were involved into this raid and they were armed with suicide vests, grenades and machine guns.

Three days before Mujahid declared this, he had informed the society that Taliban was officially issuing a statement of threatening for those working on November 7, runoff presidential race between Hamid Karzai and Abdulah Abdulah.

*When All is Said and Done*

Salome has been with me since we were 8. We aren’t just best friends but we are better than the best ones. Yes it is difficult to express our friendship in words but that’s because everything is already said and done. We have theoretical and practical experience of proving our true friendship to each other. The time itself examined us in this.

We were class mates at first; sitting always at the same desk the teachers often called us ‘the whole in halves’ and warned us only not to get married with the same guy :). Then we became the group mates at the university and in whole for about 13 years we are together, only at night we sleep in different places. To cut in short, she is my first sis and I’m her only one. :)

I remember the first time I met Salo at school. It was my first week in a new school and I already managed to have dispute with a guy sitting next to me. He flung me against the wall. I hurt my teeth and started crying. Salo came to me then and consoled me so well that I was astonished. My tooth was still in pain but I wasn’t crying any more :).

Salo is everywhere, in my actual life, in my thoughts, in my night dreams, in my recollections of past time and in my faded old childhood photos. We even speak with the same terminology. It was complete shock when I found out this year that Sali and I would sit at the same desk (or whatever) any more. I wanted to turn back and say. “hey, Sali do you hear this?” but… she wasn’t there. I became depressed for several weeks, but then I realized that there always exist some kinds of links between the people who will never be separated even if they are at different sides of the world and our friendship is so true that it is absolutely everlasting.

We have never quarreled during these 13 years. I always have a reason to explain her even the most stupid actions and she is the only one who succeeds in culming me down when I’m nervous. Her name is my second name because at school the teachers used to mix up our names, so when people call “Salo” sometimes I turn my head and then realize ‘gosh! why?’ :).

When we are together with our friends and say toast about friendship, we are always the generalized pattern of close and deep friendship. Salo isn’t the only childhood friend I’ve got, but everybody knows that Salome is absolutely different phenomenon in my life. I know time will pass, our life will change stage by stage but she will still remain for me the girl who once consoled me crying for my tooth. The life won’t detach us from each other; on the contrary, it will give us more and more possibility to express our love and devotion. … and 13 years is only beginning……..
